Wow, I didn't realize it's been about a week since I posted here last. Time sure flys! :)

Things have been a little busy this week so I've been modeling the head off and on and finally finished it earlier today. I also started and finished another head I'll post shortly.

Great tutorials Mr. Shultz  I bought the UV Texturing CD and will be texturing the heads using your tutorials from there and then with UV Netter. I'll keep you posted.

I only had one little problem ( if you want to call it that ).
There are seams showing on the side of the head around the ears and around the eyes. I'll smooth them out before I texturing. No biggie :)

So here they are......Good looking dude huh?

Awwww. Thanks Jason for the mellons, I was getting lonely there for a while. G-Night, talk to you later, and if androids dream of electric sheep, do vampires dream of plasma shooters???

Thanks Rich for the comments and for FRONT PAGE again. Dave and Jason will be so jealous. I can see them turning green with envy right now, and their next e-mails will be full of curse words only a sailor would know and them damming me to eternal damnation...(sniff sniff) I'm so hhhappyyyy....(sob sob)... Just kidding guys!!!! :nana:

How long did it take me Rich??? The human head I really don't know, I had been working on all week off and on. The demon head took me about 4 hours to model loosely then about another 2 for tweaking. So about 10 hours total, Oops I mean 6 hours. Thanks again Rich

richdj
05-21-2006, 02:58 PM
No problem, as I said excellent work, only 6 hours.... Thats really good... and it's good to see something done 'after the tutorials'.... shows you've learned something and been able to put it into practice...

Pablo:

As were all aware Larry produces some excellent tutorials.. I purchased the modelling part of the character course (as well as a load of others) and I've got to say its way up there as the best money spent (and this was before he droped the price)..

Larry has his own forum, which he uses for giving feedback to those that have purchased the various character, intro to LW and other various tutorials.. As well as expert pointers/feedback, he does take a model and do a few tweeks, so you can see what he would have done... I say a few tweeks, because that is what they are, BUT, you'll be surprised at how much it changes...

If anyone else is remotely interested in character modeling, in any software, get Larrys vids NOW!!

Rich

Although, Larry!!! did I read that you are re-doing the vids for LW9?

Which forum Rich? Splinegod.com? I didn't know there is a forum on his home site. I know he's usually on SpinQuads.com and SubDivisonModeling.com too....Is there another I don't know about?
Thanks again :)

 Hello everyone! I put a texture on Dude's head. He's not finished yet though I still need to add hair and facial hair. I did a couple renders and took one of them into Photoshop and tweeked it to get a more devious effect. I still have to work on the maps a bit more but so far I think it looks pretty good, anyway. Check him out.

Oh, those are freckels on his face, not zits or blackheads

I think I'll call him Mr. DVS = (Dude Victor Smalls)

Thanks

Jason, thanks mate. About your freckels. Ummm, nawww you keep them. God only knows where they've been and what you washed them with...ewwww.

Dave, this thread is already on the front page....

Pablo, Larry uses his forum for his character series and his intro to LW. He also uses it as an alternative to here for general help and help for his IKbooster/LW8 bones CD's..

Pablo,
The texturing is looking good. I like to start surfacing a head using gradients and procedurals first just to get a basic skin going. Then I use image maps.
You can also surface bake your procedurals and use those to paint on as well. Heres some tests I did using just procedurals ,gradients and weight maps. I used the weight maps as alpha maps to get different procedurals showing up in different areas. Theres no image maps on it.

http://www.3dtrainingonline.com/examples/skin_test4.jpg

http://www.3dtrainingonline.com/examples/skin4.jpg

Also, I did some tweaking on your head mostly around the nose and eyes.
I added some geometry and changed the flow around the bridge of the nose and corners of the mouth. I wanted to get the fleshy area between the nostrils and eye sockets.

Rich, Thanks for the comments on the course material. I am in the process of redoing the material. Right now Im working on the rigging material but everything will be redone. LW9 has sufficient differences to warrant a redo.
If anyone would like to get onto my support forums just drop me an email for the enrollment keys for the sections you want access to.

LOL...You show off Mr. Shultz. :nana: Thanks for the tips. Your images look really good. You Da Man!!!
The first images of DVS' head I used your tuts from your UV texturing in LW 3D, and what I already knew about image map texturing. Like you said to do I used Texture Guide and then took the mesh image into Photoshop and went from there. I haven't tried using the gradients or procedural textureing yet I'm fooling around with sasquatch hair but I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with it I may just use polys to get the effect I'm looking for, which I don't really know what it is yet but I'll get it. Then I'll try the gradients and procedurals.
You know what I think would be another good CD for you to do is one on texturing using procedurals, gradients, shaders and weight maps as alphas and also using Vertex paint to apply them. I've looked around and haven't really found a good tut for them yet or one the covers all of them. A little food for thought...:)

The DVS head looks really good. Thanks for the tweeking it you got rid of the lines around the eyes by tweeking the nostril area, I'll have to remember that. Thanks again Mr. Shultz

Pablogrca

 Ok DVS' head is finished I think. I tweeked his head a little more especially around the mouth area the corners of the mouth were to far back the first time.
I used Sasquatch for the hair and procedurals, gradients and the image map for the skin this time. I added a shirt too, I don't really care for the floating head renders, good for testing but not as finished art. Thanks again for the tips Mr. Shultz.

Also use a texture to darken the scalp under the hair to help blend it in better. :)

Thank you Mr. Shultz
Shouldn't the texture be lighter though like real scalp. I mean when a head is shaved it usually has no tan because of the hair blocking the suns rays.
I'll try both and see which looks best. Thanks again.
