I have been following the tutorial step for step and have noticed that some steps lead to the creation of non-planar polys. Is this supposed to happen? Is there something in the setup of lightwave that can make for non-planar errors when using various tools?

gbierl, I dont think so... can you post a few images..?

Its easy to make polys non planar. If youre dealing with quads and in polygon mode its more likely then not to happen when tweaking points. If youre in subpatch mode it doesnt matter. Once you freeze the mesh back to polys they should render fine. You can also triple the polys since triangles cannot be nonplanar.

In the video's Kev goes through adjusting the cockpit which has non-planar polys to make them planar. Is it another part of the ship that you have the non-planar polys with?

Splinegod's given a pretty good overview of how easy they are to fix. Thanks Larry!
Just fyi, I got a load of non-planars in my Viper while I built it, but unless they're extreme I wouldn't panic too much over them. The main issue that non-planars cause is that they put the normal direction out of whack (in most cases, only slightly). On extreme angles to the camera, this can cause the render engine in Layout to think that the polygon is not visible as the normal direction isn't facing correctly, and the polygon will not render at all...
What exactly has become non-planar? Is it causing a problem in the model?
