January 12, 2006 KURV studios, CGFocus, and SouthernGFX is proud to announce the birth of Subdivisionmodeling.com. The vision of the new site devoted to, you guessed it, subdivision modeling.

The site is aimed at helping new modelers get into Sub-Division modeling and is a non-software specific site. I am looking for artists to allow me to use examples of their work but I want to focus on the wireframes and sub-divided, un-textured versions of models. Please remember, the site is all about helping other artists to improve their modeling skills so images that show complicated geometry and topology will really help.

Glen Southern a leading founder of the new site states, "A while ago I started to write a table-of-contents for a proposed DVD. The ideas being that I would record everything a person new to Sub-Division Modeling would need to know and release it as A SUBDIVISION MODELERS PRIMER. There is a ton of stuff out there about Sub-Division modeling, some old, some recent, some confusing, some really straight forward and self explanatory. I spent most of my time now training artists on ZBrush or just good old fashioned poly modeling and I decided the DVD would help me to inspire and encourage even more people. Then, the PRIMER got bigger. So, I put it into html and made a little website."

Thus was born www.subdivisionmodeling.com. A new site (oh no not another!), a new forum (oh no not another!) and a DVD. Well, no DVD yet but the first 2 are in place.

The site launches on the 23rd of January officially with competition prizes including a Signed Image by renowned traditional/digital artist Don Seegmiller, CGtoolKit books, SILO Licenses and even subscriptions to Peter Levius’s Human Reference site www.3d.sk.

The site has a vision which is:

1. To become an essential destination for new digital sculptors allowing them to learn, be challenged, develop and be inspired.

2. To provide existing digital sculptors a place to share their thoughts and creations and be enthusiastic in supporting and developing the next generation of modelers.

3. To become an online center for training resources for the digital modeling community and be seen as spring board for new talent.

We'd love to invite everyone to come across and take a look around. Although we are not launching until the end of January we are nearly ready.

Some guidelines if you would like to contribute.
  • Screenshots from 3D Software are acceptable. Single view shots at high screen resolution.
  • The images should not be textured or bump mapped.
  • The images can be rendered with shadows but try to keep them monochrome where possible.
  • Models using displacement can be included.
  • untextured ZBrush models are fine.
  • Where possible, make the background color #5b5b5b
  • Rendered/textured images can be `inset` to show the final look

Please join us.
